You can't install Ubuntu on a Compaq Presario R3000 because it doesn't meet the minimum systems requirements for installing Ubuntu. There is only one currently supported *buntu iso file that meets the minimum systems requirements for installing it on a Compaq Presario R3000 and that is Lubuntu. Download the latest drivers for your HP Compaq Presario V3000 to keep your Computer up-to-date. Unfortunately they also installed about a gig of unneeded printer drivers and useless startup utilities. I backed these up and deleted them. Does anyone know if and where drivers for the R3000 can be found? I would like to keep this laptop going but want to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium if I can find the drivers. Has anyone successfully upgraded from XP Pro to Windows 7 on the R3000? Any suggestions will be appreciated I just finished a successful upgrade of my R3000 (which was running ridiculously slow with XP) to Windows 7. The only issue was the audio driver. You have to follow the instructions (HP support site) to get the audio to work. I haven't tried any games or anything on the system to verify that the graphics driver is up to snuff (since this system isn't going to be used for gaming anymore). I know it's late, but I hope that helps!
Has anyone been able to install the newest versions of Ubuntu (or even LinuxMint) on this? My uncle has an old Compaq Presario M2000 with WinXP and it's pure crap. He gave it to me to try to fix for him and I'm having problems. I guess he had problems with the built-in wireless and got a Linksys notebook adapter. It connects to networks but can't access the internet.
I was screwing around with disabling and enabling the other network connections (that aren't even used) and finally got the internet working on it but if you turn the computer off and back on it goes back to the same problem: Connects to the network, can't access internet. After screwing around with it all last night with no success I decided to attempt to replace the OS with Linux. Installed Software Report Altiris Agent more. I tried Ubuntu 10.10 and Linux 10. Before I try one of my older Ubuntu discs does anyone know if Ubuntu 10.10 or Linux 10 should work? I try booting into the live DVD and it takes forever to show anything and the most it will show is the wallpaper. Nothing else loads.
I also have Linux Mint 10 installed on a 4GB USB drive and I tried to boot it from that. It actually showed desktop icons but none of the panels. I'm getting close to just giving up and giving him the bad news that he's going to have to get a new computer. This thing is driving me crazy. I don't want to have to tell him that though because he's out of a job right now and can't get a new computer until he gets a job but he was hoping to use the computer to go online to look for jobs and submit resume's.
